Surgery Day, Part 3
Max is out of surgery and doing well!!! Dr. Kopke said the surgery was longer than expected because when he was taking the implant out of the package it broke, so he had to get a new one. Only the second time that has happened in four years (Glad we're not paying for that.) But the surgery was very successful. They used to do x-rays after the surgery to see how it looks, but now they go one step farther and actually test the implant. Everything works properly, and Max's nerve even responded to sound, which is EXCELLENT news. He was sleeping, but he already heard his first sound.
Erin is at the pharmacy and getting some lunch while I stay with Max. He is groggy from the medicine, and he is in quite a bit of pain. Nausia will be a problem for a few days and he has already complained of that. But the pain in his head is only on the side of the implant and not around his whole head, so that is good news as well. Bottom line, we have had nothing but good news today (though Max may not agree.)
Max looks silly with that HUGE bandage packed around his head, but if you're going to make fun of him you better do it pretty quick, because he'll be able to hear you in another month or so.
Just thought I'd keep you in the loop. Erin will probably post more later.

OH MY WORD!!! I am SOOOOOO excited I can barely stand it. What a huge moment for him!!!! This is amazing. I actually feel a bit teary about the whole thing. It's just such a miracle. I can't wait to hear about his response to hearing for the first time. How exactly DO things sound for someone with the implant? I know it's different but I don't know how. HUGS! Angel
Yeah!! We will be praying for the pain to subside quickly so that boy can back to runnin' around! Wish I could see his face when he sees the bandages! Thanks for keeping us updated!
I LOVE MAX!!!! Praise God for all the good news... and for great doctors and the medical resources from living in 2008 for things like this.
Wonderful NEWS! How exciting to have such good news. To think he has heard his first sound! WOW....Thank you Chad and Erin for keeping us posted via the internet. I get chills to think of this wonderful miracle. I pray his little head doesn't hurt for long and that when he is totally awake he will have a big smile on his face.
Love to you all,
Sandra Y.
I'm so happy to hear that the surgery went well and that Max is doing okay overall.
We are also watching with interest since it's possible Lillian will be on the same road in the near future. Still praying about that, but we're leaning towards it.
Congratulations - that all sounds terrific! Keep us posted - I'll start praying for pain meds to do their job!
